The word founder is also used to describe
laminitis. Founder Laminitis means 'sinking of the sole' which happens
when the inside of the foot is damaged. It is a term which seems to
have arisen in the 13th century and is mentioned by Chaucer. At one
time laminitis was the vets term for the problem and everyone else
called it Founder. Some people also try to describe Founder
Laminitis as a long-term chronic lameness problem rather than laminitis
which is over quickly. In reality the two problems of laminitis and
founder are the same and all our discussions about laminitis
can be applied to founder.
